What is Global Entry?

Global Entry, offered by the United States Customs and Border Protection, is a programme that facilitates quicker customs clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travellers entering the United States. This service is a fantastic way to save both time and mental energy during your travels, akin to TSA PreCheck, which simplifies airport security processes. One of the added benefits of Global Entry is that it includes TSA PreCheck, further streamlining the travel experience. For additional tips on minimising wait times and managing travel costs, consider checking resources like NewsNation.

How Global Entry Works

Once you gain approval for Global Entry, utilising it is straightforward: simply approach a Global Entry kiosk, where you’ll scan your passport or permanent resident card, fingerprint, and complete a customs declaration. After this, you receive a receipt and can proceed to collect your baggage and exit the airport.

However, it’s important to note that this does not guarantee a hassle-free experience, as members may still be selected for additional screening. Additionally, Global Entry kiosks aren’t available at every airport, with 75 locations in total, including major hubs like Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), Los Angeles (LAX), and Miami (MIA). Some international airports, including those in Abu Dhabi (AUH), Dublin (DUB), and Montreal (YUL), also support Global Entry. You can find a complete list on the CBP website.

Eligibility for Global Entry

Before you apply, ensure you meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Citizenship: Eligible countries include Argentina, Bahrain, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Germany, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Panama, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Note that Canadian residents can access Global Entry benefits through Canada’s NEXUS programme.
  • Ineligibility: Providing false or incomplete information on your application or previous criminal records can lead to ineligibility. Other factors include outstanding warrants, pending charges, or ongoing investigations.
  • Age: Individuals aged 18 or older may apply independently. Those under 18 require consent from a parent or guardian, although the adult does not need to be a Global Entry member.

Global Entry Application Process

The application process for Global Entry is relatively simple:

  • Step one: Create a Global Online Enrollment System account and complete the application, along with a non-refundable $100 fee.
  • Step two: Fulfil any additional requirements set by your home country.
  • Step three: Allow four to six months for processing. If conditionally approved, you can proceed to the next step.
  • Step four: Attend an interview at a Global Entry Enrollment Centre or an Enrollment on Arrival location. If your travel plans include an international flight to the U.S. within six months, consider arriving at an Enrollment on Arrival location.

A Global Entry membership is valid for five years from the date of approval.
