Overview of Silk Pillowcases
Many of us struggle with waking up to frizzy, tangled hair while also trying to stay cool at night. While using a gentle laundry detergent can help manage hair damage, it doesn’t necessarily address temperature regulation during sleep. A great solution is investing in a silk pillowcase.
Silk is naturally hypoallergenic and smoother than traditional cotton, which helps reduce friction and thus, frizz and breakage. When selecting a silk pillowcase, it’s essential to consider the silk grade and momme count. The grade ranges from 2A (the least expensive) to 6A (the highest quality), while the momme count indicates the silk’s weight, with higher counts generally providing softer fabric. We tested three popular mulberry silk pillowcases: Brooklinen, Zimasilk, and Lilysilk, to see how they performed in managing hair frizz and keeping us cool at night.
Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase
The Brooklinen Mulberry Silk Pillowcase is crafted from 100% pure mulberry silk. This high-quality fabric is designed to be both breathable and insulating, making it feel cool against the skin—ideal for those who often feel hot during the night. Notably, it’s also OEKO-TEX certified, ensuring it’s free from harmful chemicals.
Our Experience with Brooklinen
From the moment we unwrapped the Brooklinen pillowcase, we were impressed by its luxurious appearance and feel. The ivory colour looked crisp, and slipping it onto our queen pillow was seamless. In terms of texture, it ranked among the smoothest we’ve tested. We particularly appreciated how it minimised frizz and tangles—brushing our hair was significantly easier after using it. Furthermore, we found the cooling claims to be accurate, and after multiple machine washes, the pillowcase retained its pristine condition without any signs of wear.
However, we did notice that the envelope closure could be problematic. During the night, the slippery fabric sometimes allowed the pillow to slide out, which was a bit inconvenient.

Zimasilk 100% Mulberry Silk Pillowcase
Constructed from 100% Grade 6A mulberry silk with a momme count of 19, the Zimasilk pillowcase is among the highest-quality options available. The brand promotes its silk as a means to help reduce cortisol levels and enhance sleep quality, which is beneficial for relaxation.
Our Experience with Zimasilk
Upon receiving the Zimasilk pillowcase, we noticed the colour was slightly less vibrant than depicted online, but it still met our expectations. Although it felt a bit thinner than some other silk pillowcases, it allowed us to drift off quickly. We appreciated the zipper closure, which effectively kept the pillow in place throughout the night.
Washing this pillowcase requires a bit more effort than standard cotton options, but that’s to be expected with silk. We opted for hand washing with a gentle soap and air drying to minimise wrinkles. After ten days of use, it still looked brand new, although we did find it didn’t necessarily feel cooler than cotton alternatives. Nonetheless, it did help reduce frizz and tangles.

Lilysilk Silk Pillowcase
The Lilysilk Silk Pillowcase stands out due to its combination of a pure silk upper side and a premium cotton underside. This design not only helps keep costs manageable but also ensures the pillow remains securely inside the case while you sleep.
Our Experience with Lilysilk
Upon testing, we found that this pillowcase felt slightly rougher than other silk options we’ve used, and it was also a bit thinner. Following the washing instructions, we opted for hand washing to maintain quality; however, after several washes, the material felt marginally rougher. Despite this, our overall sleep quality remained unaffected, and we woke up with noticeably less frizz in our hair.
Although we enjoyed the zipper closure for ease of use, we felt that the cotton side didn’t offer any significant advantages compared to other silk pillowcases. Ideally, we would have preferred it to be entirely silk for the best experience.
